Snow Day Sewing

Yesterday we got our first snowfall of the season. And it was a LOT by Seattle standards. We got a full seven inches at our house, with more on the way! It's especially beautiful here at our new house surrounded by all the woods. So we spent a lovely day playing outside, eating beef bourguignon and creamy polenta, drinking hot cocoa, and because Mark was home all day that meant he could occupy Lucy and give me some extra sewing time.

I finally made Jeni's Drawstring Bag! If you haven't checked out her tutorial, you should. It's simple and precise and quick. The only mod I made was to make the exterior fabric from patchwork. This one is for a friend, but I loved it so much I cut the same squares up to sew one for myself too.

I was also able to finish quilting my tumbler quilt last night! I'll be binding it today, and I'm very excited to take this finished quilt out and photograph it in the snow!

We were a little bit ill-prepared gear-wise for the snow, but Lucy had a ball anyways and Mark is out getting supplies right now including new mittens, snow pants and a sled. We're due for another 5 to 8 inches over the next day or two. It's starting to come down again now right as I type!

Even Norman loves the snow!

If you look closely you can see our first snowman in the yard. I think a whole snow family is on the agenda for today.

Have a great week everyone and stay warm!

  1. Nice! We are getting our first snow fall today too. We live in Chilliwack, BC so not far from you and obviously the same storm. My kids are having a snow storm.

  6. Oh my goodness...it's a postcard! Your snow looks so refreshing as we swelter in a north wind 39 C day! Either way, great sewing days....you with the heater, me with the air conditioner! I love your tumbler quilt. I've got one brewing in my head. Just working out whether to buy a template or use cardboard. (No accuquilt here sadly)

it's also nice to see snow that i don't have to shovel. our warm winter is strange, but the last of the frozen stuff is okay by me.

  9. How lovely to see the drawstring bag! I printed out the pattern, and it's been sitting on my craft table ever since... Great to have another nudge to get going on it.

  10. You got WAY more snow than we did up here in Vancouver, but apparently more is on it's way. Fingers crossed. Have fun!! So happy you got some sewing done. I love that patchwork bag.

  11. You found the perfect spot to get a snap shot of your tumbler quilt. I have done one of these myself, but made it into a charm quilt where no 2 pieces are alike. There is even a piece of one of my husband's shirts in it. I cut pieces for a couple of weeks and enough to make 2 more (I must have been crazy) for my daughters, plus enough pieces for an extra that someone bought from me on Ebay. I believe I have posted a pic on my blog of this quilt. Your snow is beautiful, but hope you don't get what they had in Alaska. We in Ohio have had such a milder winter with only one snow storm with snow being pretty much melted by the next day. Keep warm and thanks for sharing your photos.
